MicroshapesSpeculative Gut Health Test Kit & Brand Identity
About
Microshapes is a speculative branding project for a DIY gut health kit. This was a brief set by studio Three Ten Seven, with the question of ‘how do you show the microbiome without grossing out the audiences?’ and I saw this as a challenge to escape traditional motifs associated with the gut, and to make the DIY experience more personal to the user.
I explored weaving patterns for their complexity and interconnectedness, and this correlates to how the microbiome operates as a network of complex interactions. The result is a Gut Atlas/Journal, where users are provided with an individual pattern based on their test results, and they can use the journal to plan for their next test and new pattern. This insinuates that microbiomes are in flux; they’re not fixed, which will motivate users more. The logo is a monogram with the ‘M’ ‘S’ ‘S’ woven together to hint to the complex weaving patterns in the brand. The branding is vibrant through imagery and patterns that complement each other. The brand isn’t meant to feel like a fix, but more of a journey and community.
